Description
Lilium primulinum Baker 1892
Taxonomy:
Actually accepted infraspecifics as follows:
Lilium primulinum var. burmanicum
Lilium primulinum var. ochraceum
Lilium primulinum var. primulinum (not in propagation at the moment due to a lack of availability)
Laboratory comment:
We leave Kews´ taxonomy here on purpose and incline towards listing the different subspecies of Lilium primulinum separately. The reason for that is the still insufficient genetic analysis of the entire Lilium primulinum complex. The pictures below will prove how variable these clones are which all were identified as Lilium primulinum var. burmanicum. Although simple colour variation won´t be a leading aspect for any taxonomy-criteria the different coloured-clones are a mandate for our propagation and tissue-culture aims to keep & treat these clones strictly separated and apart from each other. Mixing them later through cross-pollination would be a genetic and possibly irreplaceable loss if it turns out to any time later that these clones have to be kept apart taxonomically.
Lilium poilanei, Lilium nepalense and most of all Lilium majoense are supposed to be closely related to Lilium primulinum and maybe will get integrated into the primulinum-complex one day.
Lilium primulinum var. burmanicum ex Yunnan came as bulbs to Steve Garvie, we got seeds from in late 2021.
